IFSTA Story #1
In 1931, the first state training manual “The Essentials of Firemanship” by John E. Taplin was published with the support of Oklahoma A&M College. By 1935, IFSTA had been formed and hosted its first working conference at Fire Station 1 in Stillwater.

IFSTA Story #2
In March of 1977, the first edition of Essentials of Fire Fighting was released and sold more than 121,000 copies. Today, Essentials has sold nearly two million copies, is available on six continents in multiple languages, and is distributed in print, digital, and audible formats.

IFSTA Story #3
IFSTA is proud to be the fire service’s publisher of choice in North America and worldwide. Whether it’s certification training, promotional testing, or continuing education, IFSTA materials serve as the trusted source for validated content – created by firefighters for firefighters.

IFSTA Story #4
Validation committees are the key to IFSTA’s success and imprint their mark on everything that we do. While a lot has changed since 1935, our committees still operate with the same driving purpose – to leave the fire service better than we found it.
